Barn Red Farm House Buffet makeover

When my client reached out and asked me to turn her buffet into a statement piece, I was thrilled. Statement furniture is my jam and the heart of my business. We were tossing ideas back and forth, discussing the usual colors, blue, gray….but she threw me a curve ball when she said she really loved the idea of red. I don’t live red. I imagined red walls and fire trucks, just not my style. I decided to find inspo on Pinterest and came across Dixie Belle’s shade, Barn Red. It was relieved Becca it was actually very tasteful! I thought, ok, I can do this.

Her buffet had already been painted white with Annie Sloan. Since it was a chalk paint I did not have to completely strip it down, instead I lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to prep the surface. Once sanding was complete, I used Dixie Belle White Lighting to make sure the paint was free of wax and furniture cleaner to insure my paint would adhere correctly.

Next, I applied three coats of Dixie Belle Barn Red letting the paint dry a few hours in between. Once dried and no white was visible, I started applying my wax Gray wax.

Applying the wax can be tricky, once it touches the paint, it absorbs it and you cant buff it too much or you will get a patchy uneven look. I”ll be honest, I had to do this a couple times. If you dont like the look you can remove with with by cleaning with a damp cloth, then reapply the paint. I find the wax residue needs to be completely removed before it can be reapplied to get the lightly shaded look I was going for.

I applied new hardware I purchase from Home Depot. (these are similar) I loved the Farmhouse pull style with the same color matching knobs. I also sprayed the hinges Oil Rubbed bronze to match because they were black.

I applied the wax to the top and sides. I went over the wax lightly with a watered down brush and a small amount of the Dixie belle paint to lightly blend the wax and give a more melted appearance.

Once the paint dried, I let the wax cure for about a week and applied a clear enamel, then brushed on my top coat for a smooth even appearance that is supper durable.

I also found my client a table and painted it white with gray accents as well. She was looking to purchase a white table from Wayfair for around $600. I was able to find her a table, with chairs on Facebook Marketplace and paint it for less! That was very exciting for us both!

Above the buffet is an old railroad tie gifted to my client from her friend. It was the inspiration to her dining room makeover and I love it with the pop pf red. She was so right choosing this color! Let me know what you think of this buffet makeover in the comments below or if you plan to try this for yourself!
