Annie Sloan Paris Gray chalk paint makeover

I’ve been promising my Mom that I would refinish a set of dressers for her and my Dad’s bedroom. They have had this same dressers my whole life…see how I transformed it into a stylish new addition to my office.  We were on the hunt for a dresser and chest of drawers that had potential. It took a little while but we finally came across a beautiful matching set!

I love that this was a dresser and chest of drawer combo because a chest of drawer takes up less floor space!

Although they were structurally sounds, they were in pretty rough condition. They had been neglected in storage for a few years. I started by picking off loose veneer and filling it with bondo. Honestly, this was very tedious process, the veneer must have separated from the dresser while in the humid storage locker. Once all of the veneer had been repaired, I removed the hardware which was also very tedious. There were 42 pulls, each pull was 3 pieces, that 126 pieces!

I soaked the hardware in warm water with vinegar and soap then scrubbed with bar keepers friend since they were so dirty. I thoroughly rinsed the hardware and laid them out  on a clean piece of plywood. Once dry I sprayed the hardware with this chalky finish spray paint by Krylon. I sprayed two-three coats, allowed to dry then lightly sanded with 220 grit sand paper. To seal I sprayed with a clear top coat.

Since these dresser are mahogany, I did spray with an oil based primmer tp prevent bleed through. Once it dried and bleeding stopped, I applied two coats of Annie Sloan Paris Gray.

I wanted to add a special touch, so I stenciled this detail on the side of the drawer.

Once dried, I lightly sanded the paint with 220 grit sand paper to even out any brush marks. I like this color because it did not change color when it was sanded. I lightly distressed the edges, you can see the white of the prime coat peek through, I liked the look of this but you could opt for a gray primer or substitute the primer for an oil based clear coat.

To seal I used a clear wax. You can even use a mat clear coat to seal for a more durable finish. I find wax coat is super easy and quick to apply. Perfect for low traffic, gentle use. If you have children or animals I would definitely protect your paint with a durable clear coat that is easy to clean and will protect your hard work.

Overall I am super excited about this project! Let me know what you think of the transformation! 🙂
